We’re thrilled to announce the next chapter of The Coral Project: we’re joining Vox Media.

This move will help us focus on our mission, grow our reach, and ensure the long-term success of our work. Since its founding in 2005, Vox Media has long been focused on community-centered journalism and technology, and its content management system Chorus is widely recognized as an industry leader. As we release our hosted version of Talk to the world, they’re the perfect partner for our work.

The most essential aspects of our work won’t change. We’re still focused on helping journalists engage better with their communities (and vice versa). We will continue to conduct research, write guides, and contribute to the wider ecosystem of audience engagement, for the improvement of all kinds of journalism. Our entire team is moving over to Vox Media, where we will continue to build on our Talk platform, adding new features and fixes to improve online conversation without compromising user privacy. And Talk will continue to be open source, just as it was before.

Thanks to Vox Media, we are immediately expanding our hosted/managed version of Talk. We can host and run Talk for you, managing upgrades, support, management, and server maintenance, so that you can focus on creating amazing journalism. You can read the full announcement on Vox Media’s newsroom post.

If you’d like to learn more about our managed version of the tool that manages the communities of nearly 50 newsrooms in 12 countries, including the Washington Post, the Wall Street Journal, New York Magazine and The Intercept, get in touch.

Since 2015, the Mozilla Foundation has incubated The Coral Project to support journalism and improve online dialog around the world through privacy-centered, open source software. Originally founded as a two-year collaboration between Mozilla, the New York Times and the Washington Post, it became entirely a Mozilla project in 2017, before joining Vox Media in January 2019.

We’d like to thank everyone who has supported our work and helped us get to this point, in particular the Mozilla Foundation, the Knight Foundation, the Democracy Fund, the News Integrity Initiative at the Newmark J School, the Rita Allen Foundation, Craig Newmark Philanthropies, the New York Times, the Washington Post, and all of the newsrooms and community members who use our tools and collaborate with us on our mission to strengthen journalism and the communities we serve.

We can’t wait to begin the next phase of The Coral Project at Vox Media. Because journalism needs everyone.
